You should never use non-steel tweezers on your face. Here’s why

Whether you’re taming a unibrow or plucking that errant chin hair that popped up out of nowhere, a good pair of tweezers is essential to any well-supplied beauty arsenal. But when it comes to the versatility and reliability of a pair of tweezers, they’re, unfortunately, not all created equal. For tweezers, especially, you get what you pay for. As New York City dermatologist Joshua Zeichner explained to Makeup.com, “The cost of your tweezer depends on how finely it is constructed and what it is made from.”

Some tweezers may use materials like nickel or alloy in their construction (via The Health Site). While that may seem like no big deal, when it comes to the delicate skin of your face, the last thing you want to do is put any material that could cause an allergic reaction directly in contact with a hair follicle! Whether you have sensitive skin or not, to avoid an infection or skin irritation, be sure that any tweezers you buy or use are made of 100 percent stainless steel or titanium.

100 percent stainless steel tweezers or titanium tweezers are durable and hypo-allergenic

According to the Mayo Clinic, prolonged exposure to nickel and nickel alloys, could result in contact dermatitis even if you’ve never experienced a metal allergy before. That means within hours to days of using your tweezers you could develop an itchy, scaly, and unsightly rash that could even result in blisters in extreme cases. What’s worse, once you develop a nickel allergy you will have a reaction every time you come in contact with that metal.

Aside from preventing an allergic reaction, 100 percent stainless steel and titanium tweezers are more durable, if treated properly will last a lot longer than the cheaper alternatives, and will not rust (via Your Best Digs and Scientific American). Celebrity stylist Christie Moeller stressed on her blog I Can Style U, “You should NEVER buy a Tweezer that isn’t made of 100 percent stainless steel or hard coated PVD Titanium Nitrate… These materials, besides being ultra-durable can also protect your skin from any contamination and will not rust. Titanium is the new vogue in beauty tools — it is incredibly corrosion resistant, reduces friction to increase the usable life of the tool, and makes gliding ergonomics easier for smooth, super-precise performance.”
