Journalist Piers Morgan has slammed the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2021 for “celebrating losers”. Piers argued that people should be more focused on “coming first” in his controversial tweet.

Addressing his 7.9 million Twitter followers, he wrote: “The #SPOTY Team of the Year award going to a team that didn’t win anything perfectly epitomises the absurd new fad of celebrating sporting losers.

“There’s more kudos/silverware to be had in failing or quitting than actually coming first.”

When the England team were given the award, their manager Gareth Southgate came up to speak about the players, who came incredibly close to winning the Euros this year.

Unfortunately, England were defeated by Italy at the final hurdle, but it was the closest the country has come to tasting victory in years.

Gareth said: ““They are a team. What appealed to people is that from the youngest to the oldest, they pulled together through the whole summer.

“They represented the country brilliantly off and on the pitch.”

In light of Piers’ controversial tweet, many Twitter users took to the comments section to share their conflicting opinions on the awards.

“It’s a Sports personality award…. Not a winners award…” wrote Nigel Cunningham.

Gemma Raggett commented: “It wasn’t about losing! It was about being in a final which none of us ever thought we would witness in our lifetime.

“It’s a massive achievement considering how long it’s been since the last time we were in a final.

MuseeRodin added: “It’s not about winning – it’s UK team performance of the year.

“Of course they should be lauded. It’s the best international footballing performance from a UK team in 60 years.

“Nothing much was expected of them and they ultimately lost in a game of pitch-&-toss. They were great.”

Some agreed with Piers, however, with JaseTheAce105 writing: “I strongly agree with this Tweet. A team that wins nothing is the team of the year [laughing emoji].”

“My thoughts entirely on the absurdity of Gareth Southgate and his England team winning,” wrote John Myles.

Piers also responded to a now-deleted tweet directed at him from Will Cargill, which read: “The ‘team’ of the year award doesn’t state that the team has won the most things!

“A team is much more than that! Pretty sad you feel the need to tweet this.

“The football team showed us togetherness, we certainly all need that right now! Not a trophy.”

“Oh please. If it’s not about winning then why keep score?” Piers replied bluntly.

The Sport Personality of the Year winner is judged by a public vote, as fans decide which sportsperson they believe has achieved the most that year.

In the end, tennis star Emma Raducanu came out with the top prize, while diver Tom Daley came in second, and swimmer Adam Peaty got third place.
