Owen Warner's mum Polly has opened up about her battle with the congenital heart condition Ventricular Tachycardia, which has left her needing a heart transplant.

Polly, 57, was first diagnosed with the condition at just 18 months old, after she was discovered to have a leaking mitral valve and narrowing of the aorta.

She has since been suffering problems her entire life, and underwent invasive heart surgery for the first time at the young age of 11.

And at the age of 34, when her sons were all under the age of five, Polly was hospitalised for heart failure, after she suffered a cough which quickly worsened.

Recalling this terrifying time, the mum-of-three said: "When I was just 34 years old with my hands full with three young boys, I developed a cough and became very breathless.

"Eventually my symptoms became so intense that I was finally diagnosed with heart failure. Fortunately, the medications started working and I began improving. I was young and had three boys – a lot to fight for."

Now at 54, Polly has been told she needs to undergo a heart transplant in the next two years, after previously getting an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to manage her heart rhythm 14 years ago.

Opening up about his mum's health, Hollyoaks star and I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! runner-up, Owen told the Daily Mail: "Nothing makes you step back and look at things more than somebody in your family having problems with their health.

"Our mum means so much to us, she’s the heart of the family, so the news we’ve had over this past year has been really hard to hear. Mum has helped us all through so much and been so strong for us all, now it’s our turn to do the same for her."

Owen and his two look-alike brothers are all supporting their mum, and this month his brother Louie is running the Goodwood Marathon to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Polly usually speaks to her son every day and Owen even FaceTimed her while on his flight to Australia for I'm A Celeb last year.

In one adorable photo posted to his social media last year, Owen showed his admiration for his mother as he put a protective arm around his doting mum as the duo smiled for the camera.

Captioning the snap, the soap star wrote: "Honestly don’t know where I’d be without this absolute gem [heart emoji]".

During lockdown, Owen even sent his beloved mum Polly a cushion with his own face printed on it to make sure that she constantly had a reminder of her son.
