Matt Lucas has explained his decision to lose weight after Great British Bake Off fans were left in shock by his new look in the first episode of the latest series.

On Tuesday evening this week, the Channel 4 series returned for its 2022 series and fans reacted to the host's transformation. The comedian and presenter has revealed his motivation for shedding the pounds.

The Little Britain star, 48, said on Gabby Logan's podcast Midpoint that his reason for wanting to lose weight was that he was re-assessing his life at middle age.

The actor and comedian said: "It’s really… I’m 48, my dad died when he was 52, very suddenly. His dad died I think at 56. So I was looking at the law of averages here."

He continued: "I was very big, and I was getting bigger in the pandemic actually, sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot of roast potatoes. I can’t tell you how many roast potatoes I ate.’

Matt went on to say that the amount he was eating was down to the fact "there was nothing else to do".

Whilst confirming that he has dropped down several clothes sizes, from XXL to a medium, Matt said that he "still has a tum".

When TV presenter Gabby asked how the weight loss has effected him on a daily basis, the Bridesmaids star said: "I do feel a bit better. I feel a bit relieved.

"I don’t do any drugs and I don’t smoke and I hardly ever drink. So it’s just the food really. But you know what, I just don’t eat as much, but I eat sweets still. I love sweets."

While watching the premiere, several fans remarked on Matt's new physique.

One user wrote: "Can't get over how much weight matt lucas has lost!!"

Another added: "Kudos to Matt Lucas he's lost weight and looks good. He's looks like he did in 1995 on Shooting Stars"

Channel 4's hit baking show returned to out screens this week with Matt co-hosting next to Noel Fielding. Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith have also returned for the new series.

Junesz became the first contestant to be named Star Baker while Will was the first baker to clear his bench and bid farewell to the tent.

GBBO returns for its second episode of the new series on Tuesday 20 September.
