Midsomer Murders favourite Neil Dudgeon, 60, has reassured Holly Willoughby, 40, that she doesn’t need to be an exceptionally talented actor to make a guest appearance in the ITV drama. Making a cheeky quip about the cast during an appearance on This Morning alongside his co-star Nick Hendrix, 35, who plays Detective Sergeant Jamie Winter, Neil spoke out while offering Holly a role on their show.

The actors began by informing the excited presenter that they “need her” on the series.

“That’s amazing! Yes!” she gushed in response.

“I’ve seen every single episode since it started way back when… are you serious?”

However, despite being thrilled about the job offer, Holly expressed her concerns about her lack of acting experience.

The host told the duo: “You’re going to have to, like, kill me off really quickly because I’m terrible at acting!

“I don’t know what I’m going to do!”

“No you’re not!” Holly’s co-host Phillip Schofield exclaimed in response to her doubts.

Holly frowned, looking unconvinced, and replied: “Come on!”

DCI John Barnaby actor Neil then mischievously joked in reference to the cast’s acting pedigree: “That’s never held us back in Midsomer!”

Joining in on the joke, Nick quipped: “Neil’s been doing it for 10 years, come on in!”

“You’ll be fine,” Neil agreed, while Holly and Phillip burst into giggles over his remark.

Holly then added that she can only see herself having a small part in the series, saying: “I’ll just walk through the back of shots slightly.”

Nick disagreed with Holly, urging her to take a bigger role in the show, as he suggested: “No, no, no, I’m sure we could kill you or you could be a murderer or something!”

“It’s more substantial than that,” Neil informed the ITV favourite.

Teasing producers’ plans for Holly, the actor continued: “I can’t say more because we’ll have to figure it out and write it.”

Holly then seemed more willing to have a bigger part in the drama, as she chimed: “If you kill me, can I die by eating chocolate?

“Because I saw an episode where somebody died by eating chocolate and I was like, ‘That’s the way to go!’”

“You could be eaten by badgers or something!” Neil went on to suggest.

Holly has been offered a role after previously sharing her love for the hit crime drama.

The star admitted after being invited onto the show by Neil and Nick: “That’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.

“It’s so amazing, is it my birthday again?”
