The last thing anyone needs is another conspiracy theory lurking out there in the shadows, but it’s getting pretty hard to deny that someone at The Simpsons is getting inside information from high up. In the hilariously long line of pop cultural (hell, global) events that The Simpsons have predicted, Richard Branson’s flight to space is the newest addition. On Tuesday, Virgin Atlantic tweeted a photo of its founder Richard Branson floating in space along with a still of a Simpsons character who looks remarkably similar to Branson, also floating in space. The tweet adds “The Simpsons predicted it…”
For those not keeping up with the privately-funded billionaire space race, here’s the latest: On Sunday, the British billionaire headed 53 miles into the atmosphere. It’s not like he went to the moon, but he floated around in an airplane at the edge of space, which is more than I’ve ever done, so way to go, I guess.
But back to those weirdos at The Simpsons who can’t seem to stop writing the future. The parallel to Branson’s space flight comes from a 2008 episode called “The Burn and the Bees.” Branson isn’t mentioned by name, but that side by side makes it pretty difficult to argue that Branson wasn’t an inspiration on some level.
