Yara Shahidi rocked quite the updo at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday (June 3) and her hairstylist is opening up about the look.
The grown-ish actress’ look was inspired by Diana Ross‘ character in the movie Mahogany.
“Instead of just pulling it back into a ponytail, I incorporated braids to make it more modern,” hairstylist Nikki Nelm‘s told Vogue.
To get the look, Nikki cornrowed Yara‘s lengths back vertically, wove delicate micro-braids around wire, then molded them into abstract, gravity-defying shapes.
If you didn’t know, Yara has a special connection to Diana Ross. She plays the daughter of Tracee Ellis Ross on Black-ish, and Tracee‘s real life mom is Diana!
