THERE'S nothing like the feeling of sinking into a heavenly armchair – one that has plenty room to get cosy, and settle in for the night.
Once you find the best armchair, there's no going back – which is why we've put a list together of the best armchairs on the market right now, suitable for your style and budget.
Some of us want a smart recliner that we can put our feet up on, while others want a big squidgy chair to curl up in and read a good book.
Perhaps you want a chair that matches your sofa, or, alternatively, you want to indulge in a not-so-practical fabric that looks amazing and comes in a contrasting colour to your room scheme.
You can usually expect to pay up to, and around, £1,000 for a good armchair these days, and those that come with a guarantee are usually an indication that they’re made to last.
If you’re after a more budget option, however, you’ll find that too – there really is something for everyone, and we've whittled it down to this list of the best armchairs on the market right now.
1. Ikea Fasalt Swivel Armchair
- Fasalt Swivel armchair, £450 from IKEA – buy here
Hands up who loves a swivel chair? Yep, that’s us too. And you wouldn’t necessarily expect it from such a large piece of furniture, but that's what makes this Fasalt armchair even more unique.
You can’t help but be stopped in your tracks by this chair’s yellow velvet fabric and curvy design, but we were pleased to discover it’s also a comfy choice with foam and polyester fibre seat cushion fillings.
The Fasalt by homeware-giant IKEA measures 102cm in width and depth, so not a compact chair by any means, but one that we knew we’d like to curl up in as soon as we saw it.
Embrace your inner child, and spin to your heart's content.
2. Calvin Armchair in Velvet and Linen
- Calvin Armchair in Green Velvet and Linen, £429 from Atkin & Thyme – buy here
Torn between the look of vintage-style armchairs and more up-to-date designs? Well, now you don’t have to choose, because this model has it all: sleek wooden handles and an elegant sweeping curve design.
The green velvet material offers both comfort and style, with a matching button back and contrasting neutral linen base.
Its elegant high back, and carved wooden legs are sure never to go out of style.
3. Made.com Kubrick Wingback chair
- Kubrick Wingback chair, £399 from Made.com – buy here
Wingback chairs date back to the 1600s, and were made so that the ‘wings’ would keep the head and torso free from draughts – as well as trap the heat from a fireplace. Cosy to the max.
Today, the practicalities are less vital, but they’re still a more than popular choice – and worth keeping in mind if you have a fire and feel the cold.
This little number is a modern take on the original design, with tapered legs, dynamic lines and a rainbow button back that gives it an expensive feel.
It comes in various colours, and we really can’t decide which is our favourite, although the lime green version would be great in natural or botanical-inspired interiors.
4. Swoon Karla armchair
- Karla armchair, £699 from Swoon – buy here
Danish-inspired design in a mid-Century style, with a contemporary twist – that’s how the Karla armchair is described by makers Swoon. And we agree.
The neutral solid oak frame sits on the outside of this design, with steam-bent curved armrests and a dramatically sloped back with vertical slats.
The covers are made from a wool blend, and the wrapped foam cushions offer a comfy bum seat – there is a humongous colour choice as well, so don't feel worried about being left out.
5. French Connection Zinc Cuddler Power Footrest
- French Connection Zinc Cuddler Power Footrest, £1,199 from DFS – buy here
DFS have this beauty in their range from designer brand French Connection to boast about – and doesn't it look comfy?
Perfect for couples, the Cuddler is made for just that – and it also has the option to release a sturdy footrest to bring your comfort to the max.
The Zinc Cuddler is pricey, but it comes with a 15 year guarantee so you know you're investing in a chair that's built to last.
It's available in an on-trend teal, as well as mustard, and many more colours.
6. Oliver Bonas Flora Scalloped Velvet Armchair
- Flora Scalloped Velvet Armchair, £395 from Oliver Bonas – buy here
Shell or scalloped armchairs are having a serious moment right now – and this one from Oliver Bonas is definitely our favourite of the lot.
It comes in a range of different colours, including this head-turning dusty pink, and being donned in pink velvet will make you feel like royalty.
With its golden-capped, dark beech legs this is definitely a statement armchair you don't want to miss out on.
7. MADE.com Orson Armchair
- Orson Small Armchair, £349 from MADE.com – buy here
This is a classic example of an overstuffed chair – MADE.com have nailed it once again.
We love it in this Seafoam Blue colour, but it also comes in Midnight Grey, Marine Green, and more.
The velvet makes it look and feels luxurious, while the wooden legs help retain a traditional English element.
This armchair is smaller, and low to the ground so it feels like a pioneer in comfort.
What is an overstuffed chair?
It is a comfortable, upholstered armchair with an arm support on each side.
One of our favourites, as shown in the picture, is this overstuffed chair from MADE.com – especially in dusty pink, or blue.
What is a feature chair?
Known more commonly as an occasional or statement chair, it tends to only be used occasionally.
Usually, it can be the starring piece of furniture in any room.
One of our favourite's right now is the dusty pink Flora Scalloped Velvet Armchair from the high-street stars at Oliver Bonas.
Finished with gold-capped legs, it pulls together the mid-century modern vibe perfectly.
