“Girls5Eva” has been renewed for Season 2 at Peacock.
News of the renewal comes a little over a month after the series dropped its eight-episode first season on Peacock, which debuted on May 6.
“We are so excited to continue ‘Girls5eva’ alongside this incredibly talented group of cast and producers,” said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “It was hard to miss the immediate fandom that was born after the launch of this series. This aspirational comeback story is filled with heart and friendship, perfectly blended with catchy-songs and humor, and delivered by an exceptionally versatile cast. We look forward to following this group’s journey as they continue to hit just the right notes.”
In the series, when a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 90’s gets sampled by a young rapper, its members reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot. The show stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Phillips.
Like other streamers, Peacock does not release viewership information for their shows, but “Girls5Eva” has been a major critical success. The series has a 97% critical approval on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review for Variety, Daniel D’Addario wrote:
“Happily, ‘Girls5eva’…is a promising offering in its early outings. Created by ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ writer Meredith Scardino, ‘Girls5eva’ is a sophisticated joke-delivery machine that will hold special appeal to culture obsessives, and more evidence that NBCUniversal’s small-but-mighty streamer Peacock punches above its weight.”
Meredith Scardino created the series and also serves as executive producer. Jeff Richmond executive produces along with Tina Fey via Little Stranger, Inc.), Robert Carlock via Bevel Gears, and David Miner of 3 Arts Entertainment. Eric Gurian of Little Stranger also executive produces. “Girls5eva” is produced by Universal Television.
