During the DC FanDome event on Aug. 22, WB Games Montréal revealed a new Batman video game, Gotham Knights.
There were several teases, rumors and reports regarding a new Batman game from the studio that developed Batman: Arkham Origins (2013). Gotham Knights, as it turns out, won’t be part of the “Arkhamverse”.
Rather, Gotham Knights will mark the beginning of a new Batman video game universe.
Many assumed that the next Batman game from WB Games Montréal would continue the Arkhamverse. The last installment from that series, Batman: Arkham Knight, was developed by Rockysteady Studios and released in 2015.
Batman was apparently killed off at the end of Arkham Knight, although the game ended on a cliffhanger. As seen in the Gotham Knights trailer, Batman/Bruce Wayne is apparently deceased – with Robin, Redhood, Batgirl and Nightwing succeeding him as Gotham City’s protectors.
Even though Gotham Knights is picking up from Batman’s apparent death, why didn’t WB Games Montréal simply follow the events of Arkham Knight?
During an interview with Gamereactor, Gotham Knights senior producer Fleur Marty explained why WB Games Montréal decided to move away from the Arkhamverse and start a new universe.
“With Gotham Knights, we really wanted to create something completely new,” Marty said. “We wanted it to be the beginning of something. We are really excited to propose our own take on DC’s Batman Universe, on Gotham City and to shine the spotlight on our new guard of heroes.”
Asked about “any particular lessons” they would take from the Arkham franchise, Marty explained that they’re “looking at why players love that series so much,” knowing that the gamers “care very much about a well-crafted and delivered story and universe.”
Although Gotham Knights is the start of something new, the good news for fans of Batman: Arhkam is that the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League video game is based in the Arkhamverse. That said, Batman hasn’t been confirmed for the game, which is slated for a 2022 release.
So while Batman fans await the highly-anticipated Gotham Knights, they can only guess what the Caped Crusader’s fate will be in the Arkhamverse. Of course, there’s also a chance that we’ll never find out.
