Home cooks are marvelling over a brilliant trick for restoring dirty pots and pans to its original sparkling condition using five common household products – including salt and vinegar.

After seeing the hack trending on TikTok, Sara, from Perth, decided to try it herself and was so shocked with the end result she highly recommended it to others online.

To transform the bottom of an overused burnt pan, you’ll need salt, baking soda, dishwashing liquid, paper towels and white vinegar.

The clever hack has been seen by millions on TikTok who were shocked to discover the natural cleaning products worked to remove the black marks from the pan without having to spend hours scrubbing.


An Australian woman has tried a viral TikTok cleaning hack to transform her dirty cooking pans. The hack requires salt, baking soda, dishwashing liquid, paper towels and white vinegar

Finally a hack that’s actually useful! 

‘I’ve fallen for the TikTok cleaning hack and tried this today and safe to say all pots will be getting done,’ Sara wrote and posted before and after images to a popular cleaning Facebook group.

To clean the pan, place it upside down on the bench top and evenly sprinkle a generous amount of salt and bicarbonate soda on top.

Then drizzle some dishwashing liquid and scour the pan to combine the products together.

Next, cover the bottom of the pan with a few sheets of paper towel and pour over the white vinegar just enough to dampen the paper towels.

Leave the wet paper towels on for five minutes to allow the natural products to react together, then remove and rinse.

‘Some of my pots needed a little extra elbow grease as it has four years of built-up crap so I scrubbed more after removing paper towel. Happy days,’ Sara said.

‘Yes, there are plenty of products down cleaning aisles that can do the same. This is just using basic household products.’ 

How to transform old pots and pans 

What you’ll need: 

  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Paper towel
  • White vinegar

Method: 

Sprinkle an even amount of salt and bicarbonate soda on the bottom of a pan

Drizzle some dishwashing liquid over the top and scour it – the amount of time this needs to be done for will vary depending on the density of the marks

Place a few sheets of paper towel on top and pour some white vinegar on top

Leave for a few minutes to allow the products to react together

Remove the paper towel and wash the pan

Vinegar and bicarbonate soda are often used together to kill germs and deodorise objects. The abrasiveness of the salt and scour would also help remove the tough burnt marks

Her post quickly caught the attention of more than 1,000 people online who were impressed by the insight.

‘Omg this is amazing!’ one woman wrote, another said: ‘What?! That’s so cool!’

‘I saw this one and wondered if it actually worked!! Good job,’ a third said.
