Katy Perry wasn’t satisfied with just one insane outfit at the 2019 Met Gala — she needed two.
The singer, 34, showed up to the “Camp: Notes on Fashion”-themed event wearing an enormous chandelier as a dress, complete with working lightbulbs. It took Jeremy Scott’s Moschino team six weeks to place thousands of Swarovski crystals onto the dress before adding actual chandelier pieces from Swarovski’s lighting branch, according to the designer.
However, once inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the “Bon Appetit” singer changed into a tiny green tube dress, once again designed by Scott, meant to look like lettuce leaves, and nestled herself into a huge hamburger bun costume. She topped it off with a crystal headpiece featuring a giant toothpick.
While Perry certainly seemed comfortable dancing around inside the museum with the bulbous attachment to her dress, using the bathroom presented a different set of challenges, forcing her to abandon the bun shell outside the stall. As Perry climbed back into her complete look, a video captured Jennifer Lopez exiting the restroom looking very confused at Katy struggling with her costume.
Celebrities like Eva Chen, Rita Ora and Hailee Steinfeld posted videos of Perry bopping around and dancing to Cher’s performance on Instagram Stories while others, like co-host Harry Styles, simply looked on in awe.
“First we set the table, then we dine,” Katy captioned photos of her two sets of shoes — one overly embellished pair of pointed heels with a Judith Leiber chandelier purse and a second set of sparkling hamburger sneakers of her own design paired with another Leiber purse shaped like the food ($5,695).
One can only imagine what that dinner conversation was like.
