Mercury Retrograde is guaranteed to leave an impression on you this and it is the second of three retrograde movements this year. The innermost planet of the solar system first shifted into backwards gear between January and June, appearing to travel in a backwards motion across the celestial dome. The same will happen later in the year, when retrograde motion kicks in again between September and October.

In strictly astronomical terms, Mercury Retrograde occurs when the planet appears to move backwards from Earth’s point of view.

Planets typically move from west to east around the Sun but every now and again, Mercury likes to throw things into disarray.

This peculiar optical illusion – known to scientists as apparent retrograde motion – comes down to the different orbits our planets follow.

Earth takes 365 days and a bit – one year – to race around the Sun.

Mercury, on the other, completes a lap every 88 days.

As one planet catches up to the other, at certain times in the year, it appears as though Mercury is slowing down and moving backwards – much like speeding up to pass a car.

The word retrograde itself comes from the Latin word “retrogradus”, which means “backward step”.

In more spiritual or astrological terms, Mercury Retrograde can usher in a lot of confusion, tension and disruption into your life.

Relationships are said to take a hit, arguments break out at every chance and your ability to strike up a conversation just vanishes into thin air.

You may, therefore, want to prepare yourself for what is about to come by knowing when exactly Mercury will plant the seeds of chaos this year.

When does Mercury Retrograde end this year?

Mercury Retrograde kicks off this weekend for the second time this year.

The planet will appear to move backwards on three occasions.

The dates are:

  • January 30 to February 21
  • May 29 to June 22
  • September 27 to October 23

On these dates, there may be some chaos and confusion, but astrologers also think there is an opportunity for you to slow down.

According to YouTube astrologer Gregory Scott, Mercury is the planet of communication and that will have an impact on this Retrograde.

You might all of a sudden notice an increase in missed or missing emails or even letters that fail to drop through your letterbox.

If you try to make a point with someone, chances are you will miss it entirely and you will be misunderstood by those around you.

The astrologer said: “It’s just easier to get the wrong end of the stick when it comes to communication.

“Also travel can be disrupted, so planes are delayed and you hold the map the wrong way around and you’re going in the wrong direction.

“It’s that kind of stuff. It’s really just practical communication things that may be a bit more difficult.”

The astrologer wants you to keep an eye out on these issues.

Although tempting, try not to get too frustrated with the looming communication breakdown.
