DEAR DEIDRE: MY partner can barely afford a bus pass, so will he ever be responsible for his child?

We’ve been together for 17 months and I now have his baby, a little girl of five months. I’m 24 and he’s 26.

He was abusive and selfish. After she was born, I found out he was hooking up with a girl aged just 16, so I threw him out.

He stayed with her for a few weeks then came crawling back when her mother chucked him out too.

He says he wants to make a fresh start but he’s never really held down a job.

He says he’s sorry about what happened but if that girl snaps her fingers again, how do I know he won’t go running back to her like an excited puppy?

DEIDRE SAYS: He might well – and even if he stays faithful, what sort of father will this selfish, abusive and feckless guy ever be?

Tell him he can rejoin the family after he has proved himself. He needs to be a reliable and loving partner as well as a hands-on dad, find a job and keep it.

When he has held it all together for a year, then you can welcome him back to the family.
