Royal Mail has seen an influx in parcels and letters throughout the pandemic due to shops being closed and many being away from their loved ones. The postal company has announced that it is offering free parcel collection from your home until May 30.

The price is usually around 72p on top of the cost of postage or 60p if returning a parcel that has Royal Mail pre-paid postage.

The idea is that a postman will collect the parcel from customers’ doorsteps or a nominate safe space, rather than Britons having to go to the Post Office.

Royal Mail has now waived its usual fee of 60p and 72p until May 30.

The postal company will collect up to five parcels a day until that date.

The service is extremely helpful for anyone sending a large parcel or for anyone who can’t get to the Post Office.

To take advantage of the free pickup, customers can pay for postage as usual via the Royal Mail website or app and book a collection. 

When the parcel is collected, users will receive an email notification as proof of purchase.

However, you must have access to a printer to be able to use the service.

If you’re sending a parcel it must have the Royal Mail postage label attached, which means unless you’re returning an item that came with a prepaid label, it will need to be printed off in advance.

Collections are available from Monday to Saturday and can be booked up to five days in advance and until 11:59pm the day before.

Parcels must be no heavier than 20kg as well as being 61cm in length, 46cm in width and 46cm in depth.

When the service launched in October, a Royal Mail spokesperson confirmed that people running their own business from home will also be able to use the service. 

The firm said it was “one of the biggest changes to the daily service since the launch of the post box in 1852”.

Royal Mail has been under immense pressure throughout the pandemic with many parts of the country experiencing severe delays on parcels.

Customers were even worried about missing their vaccination letters.

The company regularly keeps its customers up to date with its service update.

Today Royal Mail said: “We’re delivering and collecting mail in all parts of the UK today. 

“Deliveries may be disrupted in some areas due to resourcing issues at some of our delivery offices.

“We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. If resourcing issues, associated self-isolation and safety measures prevent this, we’ll deliver at least every other day.

“It’s only in extreme cases – where offices are severely affected by absence levels – that this may not be possible.”
