Offbeat news from the world of sport
World champion Peter Wright suffered another early exit from a European Tour event as he was dumped out of the European Darts Open by a little-known Challenge Tour player.
Scott Williams, from Scotland, picked up the biggest win of his career with a 6-4 defeat of Snakebite to secure a spot in the last 16 on his European Tour debut. Wright led 2-1 early on, but a total of 15 missed doubles allowed Williams – the current Challenge Tour Order of Merit leader – in to condemn the world number one to a second round exit in a third successive European Tour event.
"That wasn't the Peter we all know, he missed too many darts at doubles, he didn't score like he could but I won," said Williams, who plays another emerging star in 2022, Josh Rock, next.
"I'm really looking forward to it, regardless of what happens. I'm a Challenge Tour player, not a professional technically, so just to be here for the whole weekend is fantastic. I'm enjoying myself."
Wright suffered a surprise defeat by Gary Anderson in the Premier League on Thursday, admitting he turned in an “absolutely rubbish” performance in Glasgow. Despite that, the two-time world champion insisted he would still go on and win the tournament at its finale in Berlin next month.
However, with an average of just 86 against Williams, there are few who would agree with him at present, and many darts fans took to social media to express their concern over Wright’s poor form.
@D_Darts125: tweeted: “I'm starting to get worried for Snakey” while Jason Crowden concurred: “Was thinking the same. Weirdly ever since he became Number 1.”
@debaes_koen, alluding to Wright’s habit of regularly changing his darts, wrote: “I know the solution for @snakebitewright. A new set of darts and everything will be all right. @UnicornDarts @reddragondarts @Winmau do you have some good stuff for Peter?”
