Figure skater Adam Rippon – the first openly gay man to represent the USA in the Winter Olympics – has announced his engagement to longtime boyfriend Jussi-Pekka Kajaala.
The pair proposed to each other while Rippon was staying with Kajaala in his native Finland this winter.
“JP and I didn’t get to see each other for almost all of 2020 because of the pandemic,” Rippon wrote on Instagram. “When there was finally a chance for me to go and see him in Finland, I jumped at it."
The couple started dating in 2018 after meeting on the dating app Tinder. Rippon told People magazine they haven't yet started making wedding plans.
Rippon won the U.S. men's figure skating title in 2016 and helped lead the U.S. to the team bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyongchang, South Korea.
Since his retirement from competitive skating, Rippon, 31, competed and won season 26 of "Dancing With the Stars." He's currently working with NBC to develop a figure skating-centered comedy series.
