Bro, that wasn’t a particularly historic rant.
Retired and mellowed former WFAN host Joe Benigno wasn’t angered at all that the previously winless Jets beat the Rams on Sunday, possibly costing themselves a chance to draft stud Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
In fact, that take is one aspect of Joe B’s fandom that always was consistent during his two-plus decades on the air.
“I gotta tell you…talking to a couple of my buddies today, I wanted to see them win,” Benigno said Monday in a brief spot on the Carton and Roberts show. “I can’t say I could sit here, even though I want Lawrence, I can’t say that I sat there [Sunday] rooting for them to lose. I just can’t. I wanted to win…That’s just the way it is.”
Benigno added that he also was “very aggravated” when the Jets blew a late lead two weeks earlier against Las Vegas.
“I don’t want to see 0-and-16,” Benigno said. “With all the negative things that are against my team, your team, our team’s name over 60 years…I don’t want that one. Let the Lions have that. Let the Browns have that. I don’t want 0-and-16.”
Benigno, who retired in November, also believes “it’s not impossible” for the Jets to regain the top spot in the draft from Jacksonville, although he said he’s “not very high” on Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, who many project to go second in the draft.
“I will live with another year of Sam Darnold before I take a flier on Justin Fields if I don’t get Trevor Lawrence,” he said.
One aspect of the Jets’ disastrous season that Benigno did get worked up over, however, was the potential replacement for head coach Adam Gase. He said he hopes GM Joe Douglas gets to make the decision, and not owner “Christopher ‘freaking’ Johnson.”
“Here’s the most important thing, they’ve got to a head coach, man,” Benigno said. “No more Todd Bowles, no more Adam Gases, they have to come up with somebody…They have to hit on this coach.
“To me, that is the most important thing they have to do, even before you draft Trevor Lawrence. If they don’t come up with the right guy, it’s gonna be the same-old, same-old and the same old spinning wheel they’re always on.”
