Low, who's won 120 of his 189 matches as boss, was contracted until 2022 but requested to terminate his contract early.
He released a statement via the DFB website, it read: "I take this step very consciously, full of pride and enormous gratitude.
"I am and will remain grateful to the DFB, which has always provided me and the team with an ideal working environment."
DFB President Fritz Keller added: "I have great respect for Joachim Low’s decision.

"The fact that he informed us about his decision at an early stage is very decent. He gives us the DFB the necessary time, calmly and a sense of proportion to name his successor."
The search will now begin for his replacement and there's no shortage of candidates for the position.
Bookmakers Betfair have installed Germany Under-21 boss Stefan Kuntz as the leading contender at 2/1.
A fraction behind him is a familiar face in Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp at 3/1.
The German, 53, is viewed by many as the perfect contender and back in 2014 described the role as a 'very attractive proposition'.
However, Klopp is contracted at Anfield until June 2024 and would have to seek permission from Liverpool before accepting any position.
Highly-rated RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann is available at 6/1 with Bayern Munich boss Hans-Dieter Flick an option at 8s.
It's 10/1 for Jurgen Klinsmann to return for a second spell with Arsene Wenger further back at 16/1 with Freiburg's Christian Streich the outsider of the pack at 20/1.
