The PGA Tour finally decided to join the other major sports.
The Tour released a statement announcing they are canceling The Players Championship Thursday night, a day after the tournament planned to finish its final three rounds without fans due to coronavirus fears. Also canceled are the next three events: The Valspar Championship, WGC March Play and the Valero Texas Open.
The organizers of The Masters, which is scheduled to begin the week of April 6, have not announced anything publicly about their plans.
“We have pledged from the start to be responsible, thoughtful and transparent with our decision process,” the Tour statement said. “We did everything possible to create a safe environment for our players in order to continue the event throughout the weekend, and we were endeavoring to give our fans a much-needed respite from the current climate. But at this point — and as the situation continues to rapidly change — the right thing to do for our players and our fans is to pause.”
The Tour said it will provide more updates and answer “additional questions” on Friday at 8 a.m.
