It’s time to hang the tinsel and put up the twinkly lights at Firehouse 51. For the first time since 2014, Chicago Fire is planning a holiday-themed episode, showrunner Derek Haas recently revealed.

The last ‘Chicago Fire’ Christmas episode aired in season 3

For some shows, holiday episodes are an annual tradition. But they haven’t quite caught on at Chicago Fire, perhaps in part because the show is often on mid-season break during December. The last time the One Chicago series aired a Christmas episode was way back in season 3.

“Santa Bites” wasn’t exactly uplifting holiday fare, as it focused on a potentially deadly house fire as well as tensions in Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Dawson’s (Monica Raymund) relationship. But there was a holiday element when the food truck Molly’s II participated in the city’s Christmas fest. Unfortunately, things went south when the truck accidentally crashed into the nativity scene.

Chicago Fire Season 1 also featured a holiday episode. “Merry Christmas, Etc.” In that episode, a woman accused the Truck 81 crew of stealing a diamond necklace from her home after they put out a kitchen fire and Cruz (Joe Minoso) dealt with his cousin’s gang involvement. Dawson also had to decide who to bring to her cousin’s fancy Christmas party, ultimately deciding to invite Casey. But when she went in for a kiss during the celebration, her future husband rejected her.

‘Chicago Fire’ showrunner teases what to expect from the upcoming holiday episode

Now, Chicago Fire fans can look forward to another holiday episode. Haas explained in an interview with TVLine that because the ninth episode of season 10 is “kind of on an island by itself” in December, he felt that was the perfect opportunity for some seasonal cheer.

“So we thought, ‘Hmm, maybe we could do a holiday episode’ — and I wrote it,” he said.

Haas didn’t reveal any specific details about what to expect from episode 9, but he did say that it will put Hallmark Channel’s famously festive offerings to shame.

“For the first time in years, as long as I can remember, we’re doing a holiday episode,” he said. “Episode 9 is going to make the Hallmark Channel jealous of our holiday episode.”

When will the new ‘Chicago Fire’ Christmas episode air?

So far, NBC hasn’t announced when we’ll see Chicago Fire Season 10 Episode 9. But based on Haas’ comments, fans can expect it to air sometime in December.

The network has already announced that special holiday programming will air on Dec. 1 (Christmas in Rockefeller Center), Dec. 15 (A Very Chrisley Christmas), and Dec. 22 (Illumination Presents: Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch). That means we’ll likely see Chicago Fire’s holiday episode on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
