Coronation Street will be cancelled on Friday in favour of the FA Cup, in which Manchester City will take on Swindon. The match will be shown on ITV during the soap’s usual spot, meaning viewers will have to go without their dose of the long-running programme. As plotlines on the soap heat up, fans have taken to social media to express their frustration at the change of schedule.
The ITV soap airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with a mix of single and double episodes of 30 minutes to an hour.
The game will be kicking off at 8pm, with coverage starting at 7.30pm, and will go on until 10.20pm, so Coronation Street has had to take a back seat for the sport to air.
It comes as the popular programme was also cancelled last month in order for The Voice Kids to launch.
However, the soap is expected to continue at its normal time on Monday at 7.30pm.
Regular fans weren’t pleased to find out about the re-jig to the usual schedule, though.
Twitter user June fumed: “Omg! How many times has Corrie been shuffled about?”
Lydia Gerver penned: “Absolutely gutted there’s no #Corrie tonight. I really don’t care for soccerball.”
“Totally love it when #Corrie is disrupted because of football,” Christopher Anstey commented sarcastically.
Rosey shared: “Gonna watch all weeks corrie later as it’s not repeated on itv3 Sunday putting other s**** on plus there sod all on tv later only rubbish football.” (sic).
The cancellation doesn’t extend to ITV’s other hit soap, Emmerdale, which will be shown as normal at 7pm.
Coronation Street fans will be eager to find what will be taking place in Weatherfield as soap bosses have teased huge twists to come following the soap’s start to the new year.
Recent episodes have started off 2022 with a bang, as Emma Brooker (played by Alexandra Mardell) and Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) found out they had accidentally killed an elderly man after he was hit by their car.
Furthermore, things are getting concerning for Abi Franklin (Sally Carman), who recently cheated on her new husband Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) with Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo).
To make matters worse, the soap favourite found out she was pregnant with his child.
Will Kevin discover the truth?
Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) knows Imran has cheated on her, but she doesn’t realise it was with Abi.
It happened following the fallout of Abi’s son Seb Franklin’s (Harry Visinoni) murder trial.
Executive producer of the ITV soap, Iain MacLeod, has teased an almighty storyline for the two couples in 2022, but the lead-up to this won’t continue until Monday.
Will the lawyer and the troubled resident’s secret be exposed to the cobbles?
Coronation Street continues on Monday at 7pm on ITV.
