Danny Dyer pays tribute to 'beautiful' Dame Barbara Windsor following her death

Danny Dyer has paid tribute to his former EastEnders co-star and soap legend Dame Barbara Windsor, following her death.

The actress, who is best known for playing Peggy Mitchell on the BBC soap, died aged 83 on Thursday, following a battle with Alzheimer’s.

Since then, tributes have flooded in for Dame Barbara from fans, friends and her former co-stars, with Danny sweetly remembering the star on Instagram.

The soap star, who plays Mick Carter, shared a picture of himself and Barbara together mid-scene in the Queen Vic.

He wrote: ‘Rest in Peace Babs. There is only one Dame in my eyes. So grateful to have known ya.’

Danny said of the TV talent: ‘You was a beautiful rare one.’

Barbara’s husband Scott Mitchell confirmed her death in a statement, that revealed she had died in her care home with Scott by her side. He said: ‘Her passing was from Alzheimer’s/dementia and Barbara eventually died peacefully and I spent the last seven days by her side.

‘Myself, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, a smile and affection for the many years of her love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives and the entertainment she gave to so many thousands of others during her career.’

Scott continued: ‘Barbara’s final weeks were typical of how she lived her life. Full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end.

‘It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserve. I will always be immensely proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could.’

Scott went on to thank the doctors and nurses that had cared for Barbara, who he wed in 2000, as well as those who had reached out with messages of support.

His statement concluded: ‘May you rest in peace now my precious Bar. I’ve lost my wife, my best friend and soul mate and my heart or life will never feel the same without you.’

Steve MacFadden, who played Barbara’s onscreen son Phil Mitchell, and Daniella Westbrook, who played her onscreen daughter Sam Mitchell, were among the EastEnders stars seen paying tribute.

Barabra first appeared as Peggy in the soap in 1994, taking over the role from original actress Jo Warne and later quitting in 2010.

Fans were thrilled when Barbara returned occasionally between 2013 and 2015. She returned again in 2016 for the storyline of Peggy’s death, following news the character’s breast cancer had returned.
