EastEnders fans were left scratching their heads in confusion when Dotty Cotton’s (Milly Zero) mum Sandy Gibson referred to her as Kirsty.

Sandy, who previously appeared in the serial drama for several episodes in 2010, rocked up during Tuesday’s (October 5) visit to the Square, hoping to track down her estranged daughter.

She crossed paths with Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), who she hoped would be able to point her in the right direction.

However, she referred to Dotty as ‘Kirsty’, and while Sonia understood the reference, fans were seemingly confused.

‘Omg Dotty is called Kirsty WHAT!!!!!!,’ said one baffled social media user, while another added: ‘Who the f**k is kirsty.’

Longtime EastEnders fans will know that Dotty’s birth name is, in fact, Kirsty.

During her initial stint in the soap – when actress Molly Conlin played the role – she and dad Nick plotted to steal Dot’s (June Brown) money, and thus she assumed the identity of ‘Dotty’ in the hopes of bonding with her grandma.

However, in spite of villainous Nick’s demands, Dotty eventually had a change of heart, and ended up growing rather fond of Dot.

After all was revealed, Dotty left the Square with her mum Sandy, but later returned in 2019.

Dot refers to her granddaughter as Kirsty, but – for some reason – the 20-year-old prefers to go by ‘Dotty’.

Sandy, meanwhile, will cause chaos now that she’s back in Walford.

The character has had quite the troubled life and, no matter how hard she tries, she just can’t seem to escape from it!

‘To say Sandy has a chequered past is an understatement and it’s no secret that Dotty’s upbringing was marred by her parents,’ said EastEnders’ boss Jon Sen.

‘Sandy’s arrival catches Dotty off guard and she’ll be forced to confront everything she’s tried to leave behind.’
