Chas Dingle will be left fuming with fiancé Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale next week as the hapless vet cancels her 20-week baby scan behind her back.

It sounds cruel, but Paddy – Dominic Brunt – genuinely thinks he’s acting in Chas’ best interests as she confesses to him how scared she is about having the scan. She’s clearly very worried and Paddy thinks he’s doing the right thing when he calls to cancel it.

Chas – played by Lucy Pargeter in the ITV soap – doesn’t see it the same way though and Paddy is very much in the doghouse when she finds out what he’s done.

During a heart-to-heart with her brother Cain, he encourages her to be honest with Paddy about her feelings.

Luckily Chas and Paddy are able to rearrange the scan quite quickly, but as they arrive at hospital, the couple are terrified about the health of their unborn baby.

As the sonographer scans Chas’ belly, they wait for what feels like a lifetime before being told their baby is perfectly healthy.

Chas and Paddy are beyond delighted and head back to the village to tell the rest of the family the good news. The Dingles celebrate, happy to have something joyful happen after Lisa’s death bombshell.

But while the rest of the clan rejoice Chas and Paddy make the decision to keep the gender of their unborn child a secret.

Later, a sombre Chas and Paddy visit baby Grace’s grave and reveal the gender to their daughter before telling her she can keep their secret for them.

Emmerdale fans know that it was at Chas’ 20-week scan during her pregnancy with Grace that was told the shattering news that her daughter had Bilateral Renal Agenisis – a condition that meant her kidneys and part of her lungs hadn’t developed properly.

Chas was heartbroken as she was told the condition was incurable and incompatible with life, meaning her baby would die moments after birth.

She was given the option to terminate the pregnancy, but Chas bravely went through with it before agreeing to donate Grace’s other organs after her death.
