Gavin and Stacey: Ruth Jones talks show's future on Lorraine
The 2019 Christmas special of Gavin and Stacey became the most-watched scripted BBC show – not just of the year or festive season – but of the decade as more than 17million fans flocked to their TV sets to watch Smithy (played by James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) back on screen. The one-off special was packed full of laughs and adorable reunions between the Shipman and West families and ended on an almighty cliffhanger when Nessa got down on one knee.
However, before fans got an answer, the episode ended, leaving Smithy stood aghast and Nessa awaiting his verdict.
Ever since, the cast have continually been pressed on whether there’s one more Gavin and Stacey outing in the offing and whether BBC viewers will ever know what happened.
And it’s something Stacey star Joanna Page addressed earlier this month, insisting she can’t imagine writers Corden and Jones would leave it as it is.
The revelation came after Page opened up about her time on the show.

“I remember on the second series when we started getting nominated for BAFTAs, I was like: ‘This doesn’t happen to people like me.’
“That job was different to any other I have ever done and I don’t think I’ll do another one like it. We’re a family.
“And it’s amazing to be in something people will watch for years and years. It’s just mad. Before we did last year’s Christmas special, it hadn’t been on telly for so long but people would still come up to me and go: ‘Oh, what’s occurring?’” she told The Sun.
Talking about the future of the show directly, Page added to the publication that she predicts “one more special” in the pipeline.
“As a fan, surely they’ve got to do another one.
“I don’t think we’d ever do another series because I don’t think we could get everyone together for long enough,
“But I can’t imagine they could leave it the way they did. One more special, then done.”
Sadly, however, it doesn’t look like 2020 has been the year when any sort of writing has commenced on a future Gavin and Stacey project according to Jones.

Despite being in lockdown with more time on her hands, writer and Nessa star Jones appeared on The One Show back in September to rule out any speculation that scripts had been written.
Presenter Alex Jones put the theory to Jones that she thought lockdown had provided the perfect opportunity to write a new series of Gavin and Stacey.
After teasing she was going to leave people to speculate, Jones eventually revealed how no such writing has taken place.
“We didn’t,” she admitted. “Because we [Corden and Jones] always have to be in the same room together.”
Corden is instead currently in Los Angeles, USA, where he presents The Late, Late Show.
“We couldn’t bubble, it’s too far,” she told Alex and Gethin Jones.
Fans will just have to keep their fingers crossed that Jones and Corden will get together at some point in the near future to put the Gavin and Stacey’s return in motion.
Gavin and Stacey is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
