The stars of Gavin and Stacey enjoyed ‘a real drink’ during the party scenes in the upcoming Christmas special.

James Corden, who co-wrote the episode with Ruth Jones, apparently encouraged the stars to get a round in as they filmed in a pub.

Star Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason, told press: ‘It was just one of the loveliest days I’ve had on set filming with everyone. Towards the end of the last day of filming we may have had a real drink in that scene.

‘Because we didn’t have any lines and we were just enjoying ourselves, we did all have a drink. It was James’s idea! It was really lovely. It wasn’t Archers and lemonade!’

Actress Melanie Walters, who plays Gwen, joked that the drinks helped with ‘all the singing and dancing’.

‘There was no effort involved! I think that transfers to the screen,’ she said.

Meanwhile Joanna Page, who stars as Stacey in the sitcom, said Alison Steadman was the last one standing when they popped out for drinks together after work.

She said: ‘It was really lovely. We went out in the evenings, we drunk lots of gin, we had lots of chats.’

But despite all the merrymaking, actor Larry Lamb, who plays Mick Shipman, confessed that everyone felt pressure for the episode to live up to the beloved series.

‘It’s like doing your driving test every day,’ Larry shared on Loose Women. ‘It’s so intense. It’s a bit scary.’

‘That was [Ruth and James’] problem [when writing],’ he added. ‘How good has this got to be? How daring can we go? The momentum [from the previous run] has got to be carried on.’

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special airs 8.30pm on Christmas Day on BBC One.
