Ryan Reynolds has always had a sense of humor about his 2011 Green Lantern movie. He made fun of it in both Deadpool movies. However, it appears he never actually watched it, until now. On the eve of the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Reynolds sat down and watched Green Lantern. He tweeted along, and here are some of his funniest reactions.
[Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Green Lantern.]
Ryan Reynolds got drunk to watch ‘Green Lantern’ before ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’
10 years wasn’t quite enough time to heal from Green Lantern sober. Reynolds wrote that he would drink his Aviation Gin while watching the film ahead of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The 2011 film was an attempt to start a Green Lantern franchise. It even ended with a tease for Sinestro (Mark Strong) becoming a villain for sequels. Alas, there was no Green Lantern 2.
Reynolds was also surprised to find that Green Lantern is not streaming anywhere. “So you’re SOL if you want to watch along,” Reynolds wrote. “But I’m going deep.”
Ryan Reynolds doesn’t know what else happened in ‘Green Lantern’
Reynolds played Hal Jordon, a daredevil test pilot who finds a Lantern ring. He joins the Lanterns in space to fight alongside them. The Green Lanterns make an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, too. In Reynolds’ film, there are a lot of sequences that are entirely visual effects, and there’s a whole subplot with Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) mutating into a giant brain himself. That would all be new to Reynolds.
He offered a cheeky assessment of Jordan, too:
As for learning that Jordon lost his father in an accident, Reynolds wrote, “Disney perfected that move.” This also confirmed Reynolds watched the extended cut of Green Lantern.
The villains no longer scare Ryan Reynolds
In his first big screen adventure, Green Lantern faces the space monster Paralllax. In hindsight, Reynolds says he’s survived worse.
“Parallax thought he was so bad,” Reynolds wrote. “He had no clue 2020 would make him look like a f*cking Beanie Baby. Go back to space, *sshole.”
As for Hector:
Reynolds got into the melodrama of it all, writing, “Wow. Hector just threw his father into a gigantic tornado of fire. That’s exactly how my dad died.” And also:
Ryan Reynolds praises the ‘Green Lantern’ cast
Reynolds was most self-deprecating about his own performance in Green Lantern. Aside from reciting the Lantern oath, of which he said, “Oath still works. I stand by my oath performance.’ Reynolds recognized his green screen special effects work left a little to be desired.
Reynolds praised his co-stars though.
Specifically, Reynolds wrote, “God damn I miss Michael Clarke Duncan” and “Angela Bassett is stunning. Period.” He pretended to be surprised to see Blake Lively in Green Lantern. They met on the set of the film and later dated and married. He also showed a photo of the Green Lantern ring he kept.
