Hollyoaks star Stephanie Waring was left horrified after teenage daughter was trolled online.
The actress — who portrays Cindy Cunningham on the Channel 4 soap —spoke on her YouTube series Keep it on the Down Low about her fear of social media, and revealed that her teenage daughter, Mia, had been trolled online when she had an account on app Musical.ly.
She said: ‘Someone had made negative comments to her on the account and I just heard this scream.’
‘The crying that came out of her, it was heart-breaking.’
‘They were calling her ugly, it was horrendous what they were writing.’
‘I was holding her and thinking, ‘Please don’t let this affect you. These people don’t know you. We love you.’’
Stephanie also opened up about her worries for her kids in a digital age, where just about anyone can be subjected to abuse from strangers.
She continued: ‘It’s soul destroying.’
‘Whenever I get a negative comment on social media — I can have loads of comments that are amazing and then this one person will say one thing that will bother me.’
‘I’ll be thinking, ‘Why does this person think that?’ It’ll bother me.’
Stephanie portrays Cindy in Hollyoaks — a character who’s been at the centre of several storylines in recent months, from the building work involved in the Grande Baazar — which led to the spellbinding October stunt — to her relationship with Luke Morgan (Gary Lucy).
Hollyoaks continues Tuesday 10 March at 7pm on E4.
