Is 1917 a true story?
The answer is yes, this World War I inspired film is something of a true story – but with extensive dramatic license.
Film director Sam Mendes drew inspiration for 1917 from a story shared by his grandfather and World War I veteran, Alfred Mendes.
But the film is not about actual events that happened to Lance Corporal Alfred H. Mendes.
As a young child Mendes remembered his grandfather telling the tale of a messenger during the war who had a message to carry – and now he has brought fragments of that tale to the big screen.

The film takes place in 1917 during Operation Alberich at the height of the First World War – and tells the tale of two young British soldiers stationed in northern France who must deliver a warning message of an ambush which could save hundreds of lives.
Is 1917 based on a book?
No – unlike a number of other motion pictures, 1917 is not in factbased on a book.
Instead the film is inspired by tales told by the film director's grandfather, during his time as a messenger in World War I.
Who is in the cast of 1917?
