Rhona Goskirk’s (Zoe Henry) could be in for the shock of a lifetime in Emmerdale, with Gus Malcolm (Alan McKenna) seemingly set to betray her in a big way.

Gus, as viewers know, rocked up in the eponymous village last month, hoping to have a word with ex-wife Rhona about using her embryos, which had been frozen decades ago while they were still together.

Rhona was stunned as she had been under the impression that said embryos were destroyed, so it came as a huge shock to her when she found out that Gus had been paying a yearly renewal fee to ensure that they weren’t.

Gus explained that he and Lucy were desperate for a child of their own but that they hadn’t been able to conceive, revealing that he he’d battled cancer, which left Rhona feeling empathetic towards him.

But his request use her embryos left Rhona with an impossible decision to make, knowing that if she said no she’d be destroying his hopes and dreams of a family. If she said yes, however, she could have a biological child out in the world which she wouldn’t have any contact with.

At first, she agreed to give Gus what he wanted, but after a heart-to-heart with Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and Mary (Louise Jameson), she reconsidered, leaving Gus heartbroken.

But despite Rhona having made her position on the matter clear, Gus has refused to take no for an answer, badgering her with unwanted phone calls, not to mention intimidating her in the vet’s surgery.

Rhona took Mary’s advice earlier this week and blocked the harasser’s number, with subsequent scenes seeing persistent Gus turn up on Rhona’s doorstep, when he found Mary unconscious following her showdown with con-woman Faye (Jane Gurnett).

Gus was hailed a hero in this particular scenario, with Mary thankful that he’d shown up to save her, but things soon took quite the turn.

Did you spot what happened next? Prior to leaving Smithy Cottage, Gus lingered, staring at the legal documents on the living room shelves, which included passports.

Mary, as viewers know, had been looking through said documents in a bid to find her own passport for the flight to Ecuador, so it’s likely that all of Smithy Cottage’s residents’ passports, including Rhona’s, were stored in the same location.

Could Gus have perhaps snatched Rhona’s passport? Or something else with her identity or signature on it?

The schemer, as viewers know, has made it quite clear that he can’t go ahead with his plot to use Rhona’s embryos without her say so.

With Rhona having refused to give her permission, could he perhaps resort to dirty tactics once more, stealing some form of identification so that he can plough through with his plan without Rhona’s permission, all the while making it look like she has given the green light?

There is no such thing as coincidences in Emmerdale, and given how we got a close-up shot of Gus staring at the passports, it’s likely that this scene will be of importance moving forward.

Is Rhona’s whole world set to implode by what Gus does next?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
