The third series in Amazon Prime Video’s Indian Original catalogue, crime drama Mirzapur received acclaim for its nine-episode first season back in 2018. Now the series has returned, and Shweta Tripathi has revealed a major evolution for her character Golu.
The second season of hit Indian series Mirzapur has just been released on Amazon Prime Video after two years off screens.
The first instalment kicked off when a horrific incident at a wedding draws two warring families together in the corrupt city of Mirzapur.
Shot in the real life location, as well as other parts of Uttar Pradesh, the series revolves around the organised crime and mob violence running rampant in parts of India.
Pankaj Tripathi stars as crime lord Akhandanand “Kaleen” Tripathi aka Kaleen Bhaiya, the unofficial king of Mirzapur who rules the city with an iron grip yet still strives to gain more power.
When his son Munna (Divyendu Sharma) accidentally kills a groom during a wedding, the crime lord goes to desperate lengths to absolve his family, including hiring idealistic lawyer Ramakant Pandit (Rajesh Tailang).
After proving a surprise hit back in 2018, the series has finally returned for another round.
In season one, viewers were introduced to Sweety (Shriya Pilgaonkar), the love interest and eventual wife of Pandit’s son Guddu (Ali Fazal).
Sweety also has a younger sister, Golu (Shweta Tripathi), who is set for a pivotal role for the ongoing second season.
Season one soon revealed Sweety and Golu’s father is a corrupt cop, and the wedding incident tangles the two families together in potentially fatal ways.
Although Golu remained innocent throughout most of the first season, she is forced to step up and protect herself against Munna in the gripping season finale.
Golu was fast on her feet and was forced to use a gun for the first time against Munna, sending Pandit’s daughter on a dark path in season two.
Speaking to Indian outlet DNA, Golu star Shweta Tripathi confirmed her character will be in a completely different state of mind by the end of the second season.

Addressing her character’s drastic evolution, she said: “Golu changes when the goal changes.”
From a cheerful, carefree young woman running for her college election in season one, Golu is now poised to take the crown of Mirzapur from Kaleen Bhaiya.
Tripathi continued: “As far as Golu is concerned, in season 1 she was a happy girl who loved to eat aloo-patty and read poems.
“She fought the college elections because she wanted to be the change that she desired to see.”
“But in season two, all of that changes. And it is of course, because of the way the first season concluded.”
The first season ended on an excruciating cliffhanger as Munna’s fate remains unknown.
However, comments from the supporting star of Mirzapur give some indicator for how the tense situation will be dealt with in the season opener.
She teased: “There’s a lot of fire, angst, no smiles and of course a lot of tears, which pretty much sums up season.”
Mirzapur season 2 is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
