One of the most anticipated scenes in all of the seasons of Outlander so far was the long-awaited reunion between Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe). However, fans might not have realised a lot was going on inside Jamie’s head when it happened – here’s what Sam Heughan has revealed.
What was Jamie thinking in the Outlander reunion scene?
Outlander fans remember how heartbreaking it was when Jamie sent his pregnant wife Claire through the stones back to the future.
As a result, viewers were counting down the days until the pair would finally be reunited in the series.
The moment came in season three, episode six when Claire went back to her husband.
After 20 years apart, she found him working in a print shop in Edinburgh under the name Alexander Malcolm.
Claire saw him first before she appeared from the shadows before him, leading Jamie to promptly faint from the shock.
Viewers who have watched the scene already will know there was plenty unsaid in the moment, from Jamie’s confusion to disbelief.
However, actor Heughan has since opened up and helped viewers make sense of Jamie’s mindset.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in 2017, he explained: “We tried to be as honest as we could be.
“What’s it like for two people who have not only not seen each other for 20 years, but were deeply in love and have shared some history together, then actually moved on?”
In Heughan’s eyes, Jamie has already been through several stages of emotions before he appears in the print shop, which is why he reacts the way he does.
He added: “He goes through all the stages of grief: anger and disillusionment and then hope, and ultimately acceptance of the fact that she’s gone.
“It does affect you, especially episode two [of season three], which is very internal.

“Just the sheer physicality of him, I felt like he was really hunched over all the time.
“You see in those four episodes that he experiences a lot, and that’s what makes him the man he is when we visit him in the print shop.”
Therefore, when the reunion actually comes, Heughan explained how Jamie was quite “awkward.”
He said: “He’s heard her a lot through the past few years, so at first, he doesn’t even trust himself, it’s like, ‘It’s just another memory.’
“And when she actually is here, well, we see his reaction, don’t we?
He continued: “We wanted to show that they fall back very quickly into that initial passion for each other, that initial love and lust.”
“But then over time they quickly realize that they’ve become different people, and it is awkward, and it is almost teenage-like, nervous and exciting. It’s fun to watch them rediscover each other.”
Fans can get all of this from the scene and the ones which follow on in the episode.
However, it is interesting to think about all of the other emotions plaguing Jamie at this moment.
Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
