Phillip Schofield has resigned from ITV after confessing to having an affair with a younger ex-colleague.

The 61-year-old, who announced his departure from This Morning last week, was due to present the British Soap Awards on June 3 but has stepped down with immediate effect following news of the affair.

The affair came to light on Friday (May 26), with Phil admitting to having a "consensual on-off relationship" with a runner at ITV who was a teenager when they met.

The affair, which Phil described as "unwise but not illegal", took place after he married Stephanie Lowe, 59, in 1993.

The former Dancing on Ice presenter issued a public apology regarding their relationship and said he had "not been truthful" about it in the past because he wanted to "protect" his ex-colleague.

In the statement released to Daily Mail, he also explained his recent departure from This Morning had "fuelled speculation" about their affair and impacted his former lover.

The presenter, who worked for ITV for more than two decades, has also been dropped by his agents at YMU Group after he went against their core values of "honesty and integrity."

Mary Bekhait, the Group CEO of YMU Group, said: “Honesty and integrity are core values for YMU’s whole business, defining everything we do.

"Talent management is a relationship based entirely on trust. “This week, we have learned important new information about our client Phillip Schofield.

The statement continued: "These facts contradicted what Phillip had previously told YMU, as well as the external advisors we had brought in to support him.

"As a result, on Thursday we agreed to part company with Phillip, with immediate effect."

Phil also released a statement, saying: "It is with the most profound regret that after 35 years of being faultlessly managed by YMU I have agreed to step down from their representation with immediate effect."
