What happened at the end of Ratched?

The suspenseful series tells the story of Mildred Ratched from 1947 until 1950, and it documents her time as an asylum nurse.

At the start of the series she shows some narcissistic traits as she battles to make her way up the ranks to become head nurse.

She manipulates Dr Richard Hanover (Jon Jon Briones) into giving her a job and she works with him on some disturbing experiments, which he believed would ‘cure’ people of their mental health conditions.

Killer Edmund Tolleson was brought into the psychiatric hospital and he was destined to face the death penalty as punishment for the multiple murders.

He had killed a number of priests, including one whom he claimed had raped his mother when he was younger.

Fans were curious to know why nurse Ratched was so infatuated with Edmund, and it later transpired the pair were siblings.

They had been orphans who had been placed with the same foster family, but they both suffered years of abuse as children.

Wanting to make sure they stuck together, their social worker forged paperwork to say they were biological siblings, and they referred to each other as ‘brother’ and ‘sister’.

Nurse Ratched had wanted to pay her brother back as he had saved them from a particularly evil foster family, and she hoped to help him escape prison.

However Edmund’s relationship with nurse Dolly (Alice Englert) got in the way and her plan to free him went downhill.

Huck was killed, Edmund escaped and Gwendolyn was cured

In the final episode, nurse Ratched had been under the impression her brother would be given a lethal injection as his form of punishment.

However, she later found out he would instead face the electric chair, which she considered to be inhumane and she called on the help of her unexpected ally, Betsy Bucket (Judy Davis).

Besty, Gwendolyn Briggs (Cynthia Nixon) and Ratched came up with a plan to free Edmund and give him the lethal injection, but an old patient at the hospital returned and messed up their plan.

Charlotte Wells (Sophie Okonedo), who suffered from severe multiple personality disorder, had come back to the hospital despite Ratched telling her to leave for good after one of her personas killed Dr Hanover.

Charlotte had taken on the persona of Hanover due to the trauma she still suffered having murdered him.

Believing she was head of the hospital, she asked for Edmund to be brought to her so she could experiment on him.

Betsy and nurse Huck Finnigan (Charlie Carver) attempted to keep her at bay, but she ended up shooting and killing Huck and taking Betsy hostage.

She forced Betsy to lead her down to Edmund’s cell and free him, and they both locked Betsy up so they could make their escape.

Charlotte and Edmund drove off just as Ratched was approaching the hospital, and she had no choice but to let them go in disbelief.

Time jumped forward to 1950 and fans learned of how Ratched and her new girlfriend Gwendolyn had moved to Mexico, leaving the hospital behind.

Gwendolyn, who had been suffering from breast cancer, was considered a miracle patient as she had been cured.

Ratched had used the money she had been given by Lenore Osgood (Sharon Stone) for bringing her Dr Hanover’s head to pay for the best treatment.

Edmund still haunted Ratched and she had repetitive dreams of him coming to kill her.

While Betsy, who had been made head nurse at the hospital, had come to visit the couple, Edmund called Ratched from a gas station phone.

Ratched warned her brother that it would not be him coming to kill her, but instead, she will set out to find and destroy him.

The final scene saw Edmund drive off into the distance with Charlotte and Louise (Amanda Plummer), Betsy’s former friend.

Fans will be waiting to find out whether Edmund kills Ratched, or whether Ratched manages to get to her brother first in a potential season two.
