Strictly Come Dancing star Tom Fletcher broke down in tears as he struggled to come to terms with his premature exit from the BBC competition.

The McFly musician, who performed with his band at London's O2 Arena only hours after he was eliminated from the show, appeared on It Takes Two with his professional dance partner Amy Dowden during Monday evening's edition.

It was a tense Musicals Week for the star, as he performed his Couples Choice to the powerful song On My Own from Les Miserables in honour of his sister Carrie Hope Fletcher.

He and Amy danced their hearts out across the studio floor but sadly all four judges said they couldn't see Tom's "heart" and wanted him to "let it go".

Following a tense dance-off against CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson, Tom was knocked out of the competition, despite head judge Shirley Ballas revealing she would have saved him.

Sitting on the sofa in front of host Rylan Clark, singer Tom was ready for the tears as he brought tissues with him.

The star fought to hide his emotions but he couldn't stop crying at his and Amy's best bits.

"Tom, I can just see how much this journey has meant to you," Rylan encouraged. "Listen, don't be embarrassed because this is what a show like this does.

"It takes over your life, it becomes such a massive part of your life. Amy becomes literally your best friend."

"Can't get rid of her!" Tom teased, but Rylan noted he "knew" it wasn't the end of his and Amy's journey.

"No, we're booked in. We're dancing tomorrow. We're literally dancing tomorrow, we're going to the training room tomorrow, and the next day – as long as you still want to!" Tom revealed. "I've loved it so much. I told you, it won't stop!"

What's more, the McFly star admitted even his son Buzz had cried the morning after his elimination from the show, and his sons had loved Amy teaching them to dance.

"I'm only crying because I've had the best time. And I'm so, so happy I did this show," Tom added, and Rylan admitted he was "gutted" both he and Amy were knocked out of the competition.

Rylan shared: "I'm gutted that you're both gone. Keep dancing, we can't wait to see you dance this week, wherever it's going to end up! Missing you already."

Fans were heartbroken to see Tom leave the competition on Saturday, and many complained it wasn't his time to go.

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday at 6:45pm on BBC One.
