The Dark Knight and Inception director is a hot favourite to reboot James Bond after Daniel Craig’s last outing next year. But in the meantime, he’s making his very own spy thriller called Tenet this summer. Shooting has already begun in Estonia, and a leaked set video suggests these spooks could be time travellers. The footage sees cars on the motorway travelling backwards, suggesting there will be some chrononautical espionage afoot.

Adding to this theory, an Estonian photograph managed to take a snap of a clapper board on set with the film’s logo written as “TENƎꓕ.”

Tenet is a principle or belief, especially one of the main principles of a religion or philosophy.

And interestingly the word is a palindrome, meaning it reads the same backwards as forwards.

Clearly, this is intentional and suggests some sort of mirroring theme perhaps.

Nolan is a fan of messing with time in his films, with his latest, Dunkirk switching back and forth between three timelines.

Differing in length, one was a week, another a day and the last an hour.

Similarly, Interstellar and Inception saw time go faster or slower for characters depending on how far away in space or how deep within a layer of dreams they were.

While Memento intercut between two timelines, with one moving backwards and The Prestige had four, intercutting three.

According to Warner Bros, Tenet is “being filmed on location across seven countries, is an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage.”

The cast includes John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, Robert Pattinson, Michael Caine, Clémence Poésy, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Kenneth Branagh.

Nolan has a current streak of releasing a movie every three years and with Bond 25 out next year too, perhaps 2023 is the year we’ll see his 007. But at least for now, Tenet will reveal what he can do with a spy movie.

Tenet is released in UK cinemas on July 17, 2020.
