The Walking Dead has seen many cast and character changes over its 10-year run on AMC so far. With the 11th and final season approaching later this year, fans have high expectations for the popular show’s finale. And to add to the hype, showrunner Angela Kang has hinted at a season like none other before.

The Walking Dead, based on the Robert Kirkman comic book series of the same name, has been airing since its debut in 2010.

The upcoming 11th and final season is due to air later this year, with fans patiently hoping for a satisfying ending.

In the meantime, current showrunner Kang has been teasing viewers about a change of pace for the popular series.

Speaking to TV Line, Kang said: “When we start [the final season], we’re rockin’ and rollin’.

“We’re back to being big and scope-y.”

Kang also teased the first part of the series will “rip” through, hinting at plenty of action sequences between the likes of Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) and co.

Commenting on a tonal shift, Kang added: “We’re going for some different tonal things than we’re used to on the show.

“Which hopefully will be fun for the audience.”

The series’ nail-biting horror sequences and chilling action are sure to have a mix-up, as Kang explains the introduction of different communities will spark many different reactions.

She added that these new faces will plunge the show into new genres fans “haven’t seen before” over the 10 seasons so far.

But what will these mean for the cast and their characters heading into the final run?

Fans know by now Daryl and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) are highly likely to emerge as survivors given AMC has announced plans for a spin-off focussing on the pair.

While there’s the ongoing feud between Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) following the latter’s sensational return in season 10.

But will Maggie finally be able to avenge her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) in season 11, or will these aforementioned genre changes see her take a more diplomatic approach?

One person fans will undoubtedly be keen to see in the final season is Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

And while Rick made a shock exit in 2018, he’s also joined Kang in teasing a possible reintroduction to the TWD universe in the not-so-distant future.

The actor, who left an indelible mark on the series as the tortured anti-hero, hoped Rick Grimes would make a return to the show before the series ended for good.

“Never say never,” Lincoln told SFX Magazine.

Kang stated in 2019 that, “the door is always open” for Rick to return in season 11, adding, Lincoln “can come back any time”.

Despite plans for three AMC original films to continue Rick Grimes’ story, fans are still hoping Lincoln will make a return in the future.

Many viewers were left unsatisfied by his character’s supposed death.

The series’ longtime leading man is currently preparing to return to the role for the first time in an AMC original film. His departure happened in the ninth season episode What Comes After.

Will Rick Grimes’ return be the one to shake things up in the final season?

The Walking Dead season 11 premieres on AMC in the USA on August 22.
