Two people have died and six others injured after a van carrying crew from Netflix show The Chosen One was involved in a serious crash in Mexico.

Actors Raymundo Garduno Cruz and Juan Francisco Gonzalez Aguilar both died from injuries sustained in the crash in the Baja California Sur peninsula, the Baja California Department of Culture confirmed on Friday.

The van is said to have flipped after running of the road in a desert area on Thursday June 16, according to local media.

The crew had apparently been working in the nearby Santa Rosalia area at the time of the crash.

When contacted by OK!, a Netflix spokesperson said: "We’re sad to confirm that two cast members have passed away after a tragic accident in transit from Santa Rosalía to the local airport."

They added: "Two other cast members and four crew members were injured but remain stable. Investigations are ongoing on the reasons for the accident, and production was paused for a few days out of respect for the victims. Our thoughts are with them and their family at this time.”

The Chosen One is an adaptation of a comic book series American Jesus, originally published as Chosen, created by Mark Millar.

Netflix describes the series as: "A 12-year-old boy learns he’s the returned Jesus Christ, destined to save humankind. Based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Peter Gross."

The release date for the series had not been confirmed prior to the crash.

The Chosen One is also the name of another show available on the streaming platform – a Portuguese series that currently has two series available to watch on Netflix – but the two do not seem to be related.

Following the news of the crash breaking on social media, singer and dancer Porscha Coleman was one of the many Twitter users to post about the tragedy.

"This is terrible news," the star wrote.

"As a fellow actor, my heart goes out to those injured and killed while filming on location. You never want to hear something like this happen when people are just doing what they love #thechosenone #netflix #mexico."

In April, comic book author Mark Millar announced on Twitter that the show had started shooting in Mexico, writing: “The American Jesus Netflix series starts shooting today in Mexico, based on the book by @mrmarkmillar & @PeterGrossArt. Our best to our friends @LeopoldoGout, @everardogout and all the cast!”

Millar is also the creator of Kick-Ass , Kingsman , and Jupiter's Legacy . The show, which was originally announced as American Jesus , is executive produced and directed by Everardo Gout, according to IMDb.
