Vikings season six is the last instalment of the drama and will be arriving in less than a month now. US broadcaster the History Channel confirmed the premiere date earlier this year. The show will be aired weekly on History in America and on Amazon Prime in the UK. has put together all you need to know about the new series of Vikings.

Will there be another season of Vikings?

Yes, is the short answer. Vikings season six will be returning after History confirmed the news earlier in 2018.

Episodes for season six are being shot on location in County Wicklow, Ireland.

There will be a total of 20 episodes in the forthcoming run, which will be split into two.

Vikings season six is confirmed to be final series of the show by History back in January 2019, bringing the drama to a close.

Creator Michael Hirst has been busy writing up episodes for the new season.

The season six recommission was announced by US broadcaster History in 2017.

History confirmed shortly before the season five premiere that Vikings would be back for more brutal action.

Network executive Eli Lehrer said: “Vikings has creatively sailed to monumental lengths.

“The series has evolved from early raids in England, to the heart-stopping death of Ragnar Lothbrok, to the fierce battles of the Great Heathen Army, and now we’ll see the sons of Ragnar exploring and conquering the known world.

“[Creator] Michael Hirst has only scratched the surface of his epic saga. We look forward to continuing our partnership with one of the greatest writers in this era of Peak TV and entertaining our viewers with 40 new episodes over the next two seasons.”

Season six will consist of 20 episodes and production is already underway.

When will Vikings season 6 be released?

Vikings season five premiered on November 29, 2017 in the UK and was available to watch in the UK on Amazon for Prime subscribers the following day.

Season five was broadcast in two parts with the first 10 instalments airing from November 29, 2017 before a midseason break.

The show returned in November 28, 2018 for the second half of season five and wrapped up on January 30, 2019.

There was a seven-month gap between the first and second half of Vikings season four, so part two of the sixth run is likely to be hitting screens in autumn 2019.

The History Channel dropped a trailer and a release date confirming the show would premiere on December 4.

Amazon Prime will be airing it the following day on December 5.

Is there a trailer for Vikings season 6?

Yes, a full trailer has now dropped in which Ivar teams up with the Rus Vikings.

Previously, a short Vikings season six trailer promo recently dropped after the season five finale which hinted at new settings in the last run.

The show will see the action heading out across Europe to Russia with Ivar making his mark after fleeing from Kattegat.

Also, the cast and crew have been sharing photos from the set of the programme.

Among the photos posted, actress Katheryn Winnick has been spotted taking on directorial duties and has filmed an episode for the forthcoming series.

There has also been speculation that King Harald (Peter Franzen) could be killed off as fans look to history to find out how the real-life figure died.

A French trailer has hinted Bjorn could meet a tragic end in the final series.

What will happen in Vikings season 6?

Vikings creator and executive producer Michael Hirst said of the new season: “The vikings are going ever outwards as raiders and traders.”

He continued to Nerdist: “I’m writing season six now and they’re in the Silk Road. They’re trading with the Russians, going to China, they’re all around the Mediterranean. And it’s actually what happened.”

Hirst previously said amid the recommission: “It has been my pleasure and my privilege to work with HISTORY and our partner MGM over five seasons and 69 episodes of Vikings.

“Now we are ready to begin production of a 20 episode season six that will deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience.”

His words suggest that season six could bring about a huge plot twist that could change the course of the show.

Hirst told about the plot of Vikings season 6: “We go on the Silk Road. Each Viking warship had an Odin banner and they’ve only every found a piece of one of those banners, and a little bit of fabric from one, but it was silk.

“So we know the Vikings were on the Silk Road. We don’t know if they got to China but we know they were trading because they were traders as well as fighters.”

Viewers will also see the Rus Vikings turning up and new character Oleg of Novgorod.

There have been theories that Bjorn will fall as King Harald rises in the final series.

One star has also hinted that Ragnar Lothbrok could be returning for one last outing despite being killed off in the fourth season.

Fans have been speculating about the ending of the show and how Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons will never be stronger than him.

Some fans want to know whether Ivar really was the son of Ragnar in real-life as they seek to learn more about the history behind the series.

There have been questions about the brutal torture method called the Blood Eagle and whether the Vikings employed this, and if indeed it will feature in the series.
