Virgin River season 3 spoilers: Lizzie and Ricky romance sealed as boss teases future

Virgin River: Alexandra Breckenridge stars in season two teaser

A new instalment of Virgin River is expected to hit screens next year after it picked up in popularity with season two. When the Netflix series finally returns, head writer Sue Tenney has assured fans Lizzie and Ricky will most likely patch things up after Connie’s dramatic intervention.

Newcomer to Virgin River Lizzie (played by Sarah Dugdale) and Ricky (Grayson Gurnsey) are set to play a major part in the romantic drama’s third season, according to updates from Sue Tenney.

Netflix have yet to officially confirm a third season, but the showrunner is keen to explore the couple’s long-running arc outlined by the original series of novels by Robyn Carr.

Speaking to TVLine, Tenney praised the young stars’ chemistry as their blossoming romance unfolded, and assured their story is far from over.

She confirmed: “Ricky has a fantastic arc in the books that I plan to explore.”

“We get into a little bit of it in season two, but we’ll definitely explore it more in further seasons.”

Alongside the passionate affair between series leads Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), Lizzie and Ricky’s young love was a highlight for many viewers this season.

The series showrunner confirmed their romance will continue despite their traumatising attempt to take their relationship to the next level in this year’s penultimate episode.

In episode eight, the couple shared an intimate moment and admitted to each other they were both virgins.

The next episode saw the teenage couple try to take their relationship to the next level, but were interrupted by Lizzie’s nosy aunt, Connie (Nicola Cavendish).

Their resulting argument ended in tears, and may make things a little awkward the next time Lizzie and Ricky want to enjoy a moment of privacy together.

However, fans can rest assured the young couple remain a central part of the main cast when Virgin River hopefully returns for a third season.

Sue Tenney also heaped praise on relatively new performers Gurnsey and Dugdale, the latter of which made her stunning debut on the series this year.

She said: “Sarah was a real find, and the characters are great together — polar opposites.”

The writer also hinted at their upcoming roles in the series as Virgin River continues, as both of them have completely different backstories to explore.

Tenney went on: “As we dive into Lizzie’s past and past relationships, it becomes very clear why someone like Ricky would be so attractive to her.

“And they both share a secret in season two that isn’t surprising from one of them and is super surprising from the other.”

A budding romance between an aspiring Marine and Connie’s niece from Hollywood certainly came out of leftfield for some viewers this year.

Even so, their developing love story quickly cemented the pair as fan favourites, and could be one of Virgin River’s biggest draws heading into a potential third season.

Plus, the mystery of Jack Sheridan’s unknown shooter is bound to keep the small town romance at the top of Netflix subscriber’s watchlists as the wait for season three continues.

Virgin River season 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
