Rick and Morty season five continued on Sunday evening as episode four, titled Rickdependance Spray premiered on Adult Swim in the USA. With a rather vague synopsis of “no shame broh, we all do it bruh,” fans really had no idea what to expect until the episode got underway. However, it’s fair to say fans weren’t happy with the latest instalment, with some branding it the “worst-ever episode” of Rick and Morty to date.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Rick and Morty season 5, episode 4.

Rickdependance Spray kicked off at Beth’s (voiced by Sarah Chalke) veterinary surgery, St Equis Hospital, where Morty (Justin Roiland) learns about the breeding mount used to collect semen from the horses.

A week-long time jump ensues and it soon transpires that sex-driven teen Morty has tried out the device himself, although this is only revealed after a series of events that sees Rick (Roiland) steal – what he thinks – is horse semen.

Rick had plans to use this in order to manufacture a weapon to take out the underground horse people otherwise known as CHUDs – although with the stolen product not what Rick thinks it is, a sort of killer intergalactic sperm is created instead.

Chaos inevitably ensues and Rick and Morty have to battle against the bizarre new enemy the interdimensional genius has created for itself.

While Rick and Morty is no stranger to presenting fans with the wildest and most mind-bending of storylines, it seems this season five instalment may have been one step too far.

In fact, its reception has been dominated by fans who have been left disappointed to say the least by the bizarre and crass nature of the episode.

Taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on Rickdependance Spray, one fan vented: “That most recent episode of rick and morty was garbage.” (Sic)

“Rick and morty sucks now,” added a second, while a third said: “That was by far the worst Rick and Morty episode I have ever watched.”

Comparing it to the well-received previous episode, A Rickconvenient Mort, another tweeted: “Last week’s Rick and Morty Morty storyline was an emotional roller coaster, and this week it’s back to horny teenager over the top s**t.”

This was echoed by a fifth fan who said: “WTF did I just watch? Was this supposed to be about honestly or gender inequality or I’m missing something? Seriously, WTF was this? #RickAndMorty.”

“Wow, this week’s Rick and Morty was c**p,” said another, while a seventh echoed: “DAF*K DID I JUST WATCH?? #RickandMorty.” (Sic)

However, an eighth argued: “Watched the newest episode of #Rickandmorty today and I gotta say this episode was funny and hilarious as hell [laugh emoji].

“It’s always a treat hearing Keith David’s voice and having his character just f*****g around. To be honest, it seemed this episode was chaotic as well lol,” they concluded.

However, the negative reception has already been reflected on popular movie and TV site IMDb.

Rickdependance Spray has only been rated a 6.8 out of 10 – making it the worst-rated episode on the website.

Fans will be hoping the next episode, Amortycan Grickfitti, will improve and get Rick and Morty back to the high standards fans have held it to previously – and there is a promo to tease what’s in store.

In the short clip, Beth needs Jerry to look after Summer and Morty after being called into work.

However, Rick intervenes and tell his daughter the two have “guy’s night” planned – at the same time as he packs up some “occult items” into a backpack.

Pleased to see Rick and Jerry seemingly getting along, however, Beth leaves them to it with what’s bound to be an odd journey ahead of them.

Rick and Morty continues Sundays on Adult Swim in the USA and Mondays on E4 in the UK and Channel 4 streaming service, All 4.
