What happened to Monica on Yellowstone?

Monica Dutton is the wife of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in the series, and she is a teacher and granddaughter of an Indian elder.
She and Kayce have a son together, called Tate (Brecken Merrill), and he is potentially next in line to inherit the Dutton Ranch.
Monica’s family, who reside at the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, have not always seen eye-to-eye with the Duttons, as they have had disputes over land.
Fans were shocked to see Monica suffer a terrible fate in the series, after she was hit whilst trying to break up a fight between two boys at her school.
While she was recovering at home, she passed out, and she was taken to hospital for some emergency tests.

While at the hospital it was discovered she had suffered a subdural haematoma – a bleed on the brain – and she needed to have surgery.
The injury put a strain on her marriage, but she and Kayce were able to settle their differences and they continued to live together as a family on the ranch.
Monica had been working as a teacher at the Heartsong Middle School when she was injured, and fans were worried for her future.
She had attended therapy following the incident, and fans noticed her walking with a cane when she had just started her new college professor role.
When asked what happened to her, she simply said she had fallen, but viewers soon discovered there was more to the story when she was seeing her therapist.

The therapist said her brain was affected by the fall, and she was left with an inability to process certain information.
She had been accidentally punched by one of the boys as she was trying to break up the fight, and blood was seen coming from her head when she fell to the ground.
The injury did not have any lasting impacts on her mentally, but her motor skills had been impeded as a result, which is why she needed a cane to walk.
Once fans realised the cause of the injury, they quickly turned their attention to the fact Monica may form a relationship with her therapist.
The pair had developed a close connection, and viewers were worried she would drop Kayce for a new relationship.

Viewers are wondering whether Monica’s injury has lasting impacts, or if this storyline will continue into future seasons.
The series is now in its third season, with season four on the way in the summer of 2021, so there is a while to wait before viewers get any insight.
Some fans believe her injury will continue to have an impact on her relationship with Kayce, and with their marriage on the rocks, anything could happen.
She has clearly been struggling internally following the traumatic event, and it is only a matter of time before she snaps.
Fans have mixed thoughts on her character, with some saying she has a tendency to hold Kayce back.

But others are keen to see more of her in future seasons, and they have taken to social media to share their thoughts.
Actress Asbille Chow is on Instagram and she has shared many photos of herself as Monica from across the series. One fan said: “Just binge watched 3 seasons of Yellowstone and you are doing an amazing job in the role. This episode was so powerful!
