Fyre Festival-like fiasco at Governors Ball leaves fans fuming

03/06/2019 World News

Organizers of the weekend’s disastrous Governors Ball offered refunds Monday for its canceled final day of performances as furious fans fumed about getting “Frye Fest’d” — and vowed to never again attend the chaotic event.

After the last day of the three-day music festival on Randall’s Island was plagued by hours of delays despite beautiful weather — then eventually canceled due to thunderstorms later Sunday — organizers said they’ll give ticket holders a full $115 refund for the show, along with pro-rated refunds for fans who bought three-day passes.

“At this time we expect all refunds to be processed within 21 days,” organizers posted on the event’s website.

But some fans said organizers kept them in the dark for hours as they waited to see headliners The Strokes and SZA. They called the gesture too little, too late.

“It’s honestly not the weather that everyone is upset about it was the lack of communication the whole day.  There basically was none and it was all very chaotic,” one person tweeted.

Another added, “Terrible organization all around, governors ball = Fyre Festival.”

On Sunday morning, the festival issued a little-noticed online warning asking attendees not to come to the island as they monitored the forecast. Two hours later, organizers announced that the gates wouldn’t open until 6:30 p.m. — only to pull the plug at 9:30 p.m.

Angry festival-goers demanded refunds Sunday night.

“[Got] Fyre Fest’d to see The f–king Strokes. How delightful,” one person fumed.

Another added, “wow gov ball getting evacuated was a nightmare. Never again!”

City Council members sent a letter to organizers insisting they give concertgoers their money back.

“Last night, tens of thousands of concert-goers were left with a substandard consumer experience, money lost in travel expenses and exposed to hazardous weather because of Founders Entertainment failure to properly cancel the event with ample notice,” reads the  letter from Councilmen Rafael Espinal and Keith Powers.

“Nobody expects festival organizers to be able to control the weather, but after years of experience putting together this event, better procedures should have been in place.”

On Monday, reps for the event said they were “working incredibly hard” to get refunds sent out quickly. Only people who bought tickets though the Governors Ball website will be given their money back, they said.
