BREAKING NEWS Iranian soldiers ‘killed in Israeli attack in Syria’: Two Revolutionary Guards reported dead by Tehran state media

  • The deaths would be the first Iranian casualties of the Hamas-Israeli conflict
  • Israel was targeting Hezbollah with strikes earlier today, a war monitor said

Two Iranian Revolutionary Guards members have been killed in an Israeli attack in Syria, according to Iranian state media.

The deaths would be the first Iranian casualties of the conflict in the southern Levant.

A statement did not give details of the attack but stated that both members served as military advisors and were working in Syria.

‘Mohammed Ali Ataei Shoorcheh and Panah Taghizadeh… were martyred by the Zionist usurper enemy while conducting an advisory mission in the Syrian Islamic resistance front,’ the Guards’ Sepah News website said.

Syria earlier today said its air defences had repelled an Israeli rocket attack against targets near Damascus. Israel was targeting sites belonging to Iranian proxy group Hezbollah, a war monitor said.

‘Two Syrian fighters working for Hezbollah and two foreign, pro-Iran fighters were killed in Israeli air strikes on Hezbollah sites near Sayyida Zeinab’ south of Damascus, said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The two foreigners died from their injuries, said the head of the British-based monitor, which has a network of sources inside Syria. He said five other fighters were wounded.

Syria’s defence ministry had also said Israel hit near Damascus, where an AFP journalist heard the loud sound of bombings.

‘At approximately 1:35 am (2235 GMT) today, the Israeli enemy carried out an air assault from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some points near the city of Damascus,’ the ministry said in a statement. It gave no casualty figures.

Israel has been engaged in clashes with forces operating out of Syria for years, itself devastated by a brutal civil war.

But it has intensified attacks since its war with Hamas began in October. Hamas last year said it had restored relations with Syria’s government.

Over the last two months, Israel has carried out repeated strikes on military infrastructure in Syria and Lebanon, hoping to displace international backers like Hezbollah.

The US has also weighed in with airstrikes on Syria in response to a rise in the number of drone attacks on its forces between Syria and Iraq, which it blames on Iran-funded proxy outfits.

Onlookers have warned escalation could risk the conflict between Hamas and Israel spilling over into a wider regional war.
