Murder charge struck out for man, 89, after wife’s death

An 89-year-old man who was charged with murdering his elderly wife has had his charge struck out.

Ronald Sparkes was charged after his 87-year-old wife, Margaret Sparkes, was found dead at a retirement home in The Basin, in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs, on May 2 last year.

Melbourne Magistrates Court confirmed on Thursday the charge against Mr Sparkes had been struck out.

Mr Sparkes spent some time in custody after his arrest but was later granted bail

The couple had been married for more than 50 years and had only recently moved into the retirement village after more than four decades living in nearby Ferny Creek.
