NBC workers join NewsGuild of New York union

The editorial employees at NBC News digital voted overwhelmingly to unionize with the NewsGuild of New York, which will now represent about 150 employees at nbcnews.com, today.com and msnbc.com.

The vote tally, announced Friday, was 90-40 in favor of unionizing.

“We have seen time and again that media workers win significant improvements to their working conditions when they come together and bargain collectively,” said Susan DeCarava, New York NewsGuild’s president-elect.

NBC’s past handling of sexual harassment complaints was an issue in the union’s campaign to organize reporters, editors, designers, video journalists, copy editors and other editorial staff.

NBC News digital had refused to voluntarily recognize the union after it announced Oct. 30 that a majority of workers had signed pledge cards. But after the vote, Chris Berend, executive vice president, NBC News digital, seemed to strike a conciliatory tone in a note to staffers obtained by The Post: “I have heard from many of you over the past several weeks about your love for NBC News, your excitement for all that we are building in Digital, and your commitment to making sure this continues to be a very special place to work.”
