GOP Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said she hopes former President Donald Trump plays a “role” in the 2022 and 2024 elections, but wouldn’t weigh in on another possible presidential run by Trump.
Capito, of West Virginia, was asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether she would back a Trump presidential bid in 2024.
“Well, I think that is a really premature question. And I think Jan. 6 still is very vivid in many of us who were at the Capitol that day, in our minds, as a very sad day for our country,” she said.
“The Republican Party is strong. We have got a lot of folks who are not just looking to lead into 2022 but into 2024. So we will see. I hope that President Trump plays a role. I don’t know whether he will run or not, but we can sort that out as time goes on,” she told host Dana Bash.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity last Monday, Trump teased a possible 2024 run for the White House.
“So I say this, I am looking at it very seriously, beyond seriously,” Trump said.
“From a legal standpoint, I don’t want to really talk about it yet, it’s a little too soon,” he added.
