Police in south China are investigating after a video has emerged showing two young girls playing on the roof of a moving car.

The shocking video shows the two girls sitting on the roof of a BMW SUV and playing hand games as it speeds along a busy motorway in Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The driver – said to be their mother – and the children appear oblivious of the potential danger of the stunt, the clip shows.

Police have tracked down the owner of the car, a 67-year-old man surnamed Huang, who claimed that the vehicle was usually driven by his daughter, according to Southern Morning Post.

Hechi authorities also said that the incident happened last June but initiated an investigation after the video emerged and went viral on social media this week.

The video also shows one of children resting her entire right leg on the roof of the SUV while playing with her sister. 

They were also seen laughing and leaning back dangerously at one point.

Police have tracked down the owner of the car, a 67-year-old man surnamed Huang, who claimed the vehicle was usually driven by his daughter, according to Southern Morning Post

Huang’s daughter confirmed the incident to officers and said she was sleeping in the passenger seat after having several drinks. She said her friend was driving at the time.

The girls were her friend’s children, she added.

The authorities said both Huang, his daughter and her friend would be summoned for further questioning today.

If convicted of dangerous driving, the persons involved could be fined between 20 yuan (£2.30) and 200 yuan (£23). 

Last October, a 13-year-old boy who stuck his body out of a car’s sunroof was killed after hitting a height clearance bar on a motorway in Xinyu, Jiangxi province.
