Queen Letizia of Spain and US First Lady Jill Biden spent the morning of 28 June 2022 together at a centre for Ukrainian refugees on the edge of Madrid, as world leaders gathered in the Spanish capital for the NATO summit.

The two women visited the reception, care and referral centre in Pozuelo de Alarcón, the first of the facilities set up by the Spanish government to register people fleeing the war in Ukraine and help them with residence and work permits. They spoke with families staying there and with the staff and volunteers who support them.

What they wore

Letizia chose a white trouser suit worn over a pale pink blouse, finished with drop earrings. The Spanish queen often returns to tailored suits for daytime engagements, and white has become one of her signature summer colours.

Dr Biden wore a navy dress with short sleeves and a full pleated skirt to the knee, printed with flowers in green, blue, yellow and red. She matched it with navy heels and gold jewellery, including bangles, a watch, a chain necklace and hoop earrings.

A busy programme

The First Lady had arrived in Madrid ahead of President Joe Biden and held a series of engagements with the queen, including a visit to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, a cause both women have championed. The partners’ programme of the summit also included cultural visits for the spouses of leaders attending the meeting.

The NATO summit took place from 28 to 30 June 2022 and was dominated by the war in Ukraine. Leaders agreed a new strategic concept for the alliance and formally invited Finland and Sweden to join.
